How do I arrange a cremation?
First, you will need to find a funeral director. If you are making arrangements for yourself you can specify in your will that you want a cremation service. The funeral director will guide you through all the necessary steps to plan the cremation.

Do I need to fill in any paperwork?
Before the cremation takes place you will be required to fill in a Cremation Authorization Form. This form, in conjunction with the death certificate, will allow for a permit to be issued by the county, called a cost of cremation permit, costing around $10–$40. However, in some states this permit is free.
How much will a cremation service cost?
Cremation is actually cheaper than a burial. On average, a cremation service in the USA will cost $3,000–$4,000 whilst a burial service is usually closer to $5,000. If you decide to have a direct cremation, where there is no service for people to attend, this will be around $2,300.
Are there coffin alternatives that are allowed?
You can opt for a shroud instead of a coffin. This will most likely be cheaper and is a more environmentally friendly option.
When can I get the ashes after the cremation service?
Unless stated otherwise, the remains will be placed in an urn and returned to the family.
What should I do with the ashes?
Unless stated in the will, what to do with the ashes is up to whoever has been given them. You might choose to scatter them in the sea, a woodland area, or even have them taken to space for a truly out of this world scattering in space.
